1.当别人在你旁边罗嗦个没完，你烦透了，说“you are so boring ”(你真烦！)。“shut up !”(闭嘴！)自然没错，可人家受得了吗？不如来一句“oh, come on .give me a break !” (帮帮忙，让我歇歇吧！)这多地道、多幽默。

2.要想说人“气色好”。“you look fine !”当然不错，可如果你说”you’re in the pink !”就妙得多了，实际上，在英语口语中，表示颜色的词用起来非常形象生动。

3.“他精力充沛”美国人说：“he is bouncy.”而不说“he is energetic ”，牢记一些日常对话中的活句式是你一把必备的钥匙。

2010年，浙江省遭遇了七年来最严重的用工荒，为此浙江省将派出四支工作组到劳力富余的省份去招工。预计浙江省的劳力需求和去年相比，还会增加20%到30%。

The four teams accredited by Zhejiang province will cooperate with labor-exporting provinces on interprovincial labor services, and some enterprises will participate inon-site recruiting.

浙江省委派的四支工作组将与劳务输出省份在跨省劳务服务方面进行合作，一些企业还会参与现场招聘活动。

在上面的报道中，on-site recruiting就是“现场招聘”。On-site的意思是“现场的，就地的”。例如：an on-site inspection（现场检查）。Recruit在这里表示“招聘，招募”，recruiter即“招聘人员”，例如：college recruiters（大专院校招生人员）。

曾经有过求职经历的人对on-site recruiting（现场招聘）应该都很熟悉，近几年online recruiting（网上招聘）也越来越流行，很多大学生现在都倾向于online job hunting（网上求职）的方式。现在部分企业也开始采用online interview（网上面试）来进行screening（筛选）。

绩效工资 merit pay

In January, Microsoft said it needed to resort to its first mass layoffs, cutting 5,000 jobs, and on Thursday it announced it would do away with merit pay increases for employees in the next fiscal year.

微软曾在一月份表示需要进行第一轮大幅裁员，5000名员工被裁减；本周四微软又宣布下一个财年将不考虑提高员工的绩效工资。

在上面的报道中，merit pay就是“绩效工资”的意思。所谓绩效工资，就是根据工作业绩来增加的那部分薪水，通常都建立在一套考核标准的基础上，目的是为了提高员工的积极性。Merit pay也叫做pay-for-performance，而针对不同岗位设定的“基本工资”则是base pay或者basic wage。

在merit pay里，merit的意思是“功绩，功劳”，也就是根据员工的功绩来决定给他/她增加的薪水。这一用法可见下面的例句：Mr. Johnson claims for himself the merit of his work.（约翰逊先生觉得自己功不可没）。“战功”就是merit of war。

Merit一词常用的意思是“长处、优点、价值”，我们常说的“优点和缺点”就是merits and demerits。如果要表示一个人唱歌很难听，那我们可以说His/Her singing is totally without merit.（他/她唱的实在一无是处）。此外，merit还可以解释为“荣誉、奖赏”，例如：a certificate of merit（荣誉奖状）。


调查失业率 surveyed unemployment rate

近年多次被指难以反映失业真实情况的登记失业率，有望在2011年被调查失业率取代。我国有望从明年起采用城镇调查失业率作为就业指标并予以公布，同时发布劳动参与等其他辅助指标。

The report by the National Development and Reform Commission acknowledged the limitations of the registered unemployment rate and said it may not represent the overall situation. The surveyed unemployment rate will be in place in 2011, the report added.

国家发改委的这份报告承认了登记失业率的局限性，指出这难以全面反映就业情况。该报告还指出，我国将在明年推行调查失业率。

文中的surveyed unemployment rate就是指“调查失业率”，是通过对劳动力情况抽样调查所取得的数据进行计算的，与之相对的则是registered unemployment rate（登记失业率，根据报告期内在劳动保障部门登记的失业人数统计得出）。由于一些失业人员并未进行登记，registered unemployment rate常存在一定的偏差。

由于经济企稳回升，节后沿海地区出现labor shortage（用工荒）。应届毕业生开学后也加入了job hunter（求职者）的大军，前往job fair（人才市场）找工作。一些headhunter（猎头）把目光瞄准了那些习惯于job-hopping（频频跳槽）的人。要想找到一份好的工作，准备一份像样的CV（简历，curriculum vitae的缩写，美语中习惯用resume）是必不可少的。

Maggie Rodriguez: One of the hot new fashion trends is statement earrings. Celebrities like Kate Winslet wear them, and Anne Hathaway, and First Lady Michelle Obama at her husband’s inauguration. But heavy earrings like these can damage your earlobes. Doctor Alan Matarasso is a New York-based plastic surgeon.Good morning, Doctor.

Maggie: Do you think we’re sacrificing too much for beauty when we wear these?

Dr. Alan: Well, no, I think that if you use these prudently, they’re absolutely fine to use.

Maggie: Why would we even have to worry? What can happen to your ears, if you don’t use them Dr. Alan: Well, with prolonged use, or pulling on them, the ear can actually rip. The earring can pull right through the earlobe and create what we call a “cleft” in the earlobe, or stretching of the earlobe which makes it look older.

Dr. Alan: That is, and…and on one side you’ll see uh, the earlobe um…with, with the…stretching the hole in it, on your left, then it’s repaired and it’s re-pierced.

Maggie: Oh, repaired and repierced. Well, let’s talk about that, but first let’s talk about avoiding this to begin with. You say the causes of that are the weight of the earring, the length of time pierced, how and where pierced, the care taken, and the trauma.

These are the situations that can cause the ear to be pulled or ripped.

　　Dr. Alan: It’s relatively straightforward. What you’re doing is you’re cutting out the hole where the earring was, you’re re-sewing it up on both sides. You can then wear clip-ons for a while, and then about two or three months later, we actually will do it in the office, we’ll re-pierce the ear for you.

"I'm really worried," she said. "My daughter is pushing toward her 30s. She has a busy job and a limited number of acquaintances. I really hope she can get married before 28 and have a baby before 30.”

一位母亲说：“我真着急。女儿都奔三了，她工作很忙，交往圈子又小。我特别希望她能在28岁前结婚，30岁之前生孩子。”

文中的push toward 30s就是我们常说的“奔三”。对于post-80's generation（80后）来说，2010年虎年标志着整整一代人开始集体奔三。由于生活压力巨大，为了不成为mortgage slave（房奴）、wedding slave（婚奴）、child’s slave（孩奴），不少80后选择单身。

为了帮儿女找到好的归宿，很多父母直接做match maker（媒人），利用假期奔赴matchmaking corner（相亲角），为孩子安排blind date（相亲）。利用match-making website（婚恋网站）进行online dating（网上约会）也成为不少年轻人的选择，由此便诞生了nearsighted date（近视相亲），即双方在见面之前先互换照片或视频见面。


孩奴 Child's slave

继“房奴”、“卡奴”、“车奴”之后，“孩奴”也成为新近流行的热词。近日，一篇《80后准妈妈怕成“孩奴”患上忧郁症》的报道引发热议。“孩奴”一词在媒体关注中迅速传播开来，成为一个社会流行语。

And a new phrase - "child's slave" - has even become popular in the Chinese media, playing on reports of "mortgage slaves" saddled with large payments for apartments, cars and credit cards.

一个新词汇——“孩奴”最近在国内媒体很流行，经常在有关“房奴”的报道中出现。“房奴”指的是背负房、车、信用卡的大量开支的那些人。

在上面的报道中，child's slave就是“孩奴”。所谓“孩奴”，就是指夫妻有孩子之后，一生都在为孩子奔波、失去自身价值的一种生活状态。据说当上了“孩奴”的人，不敢生病，不敢高消费，不敢轻易换工作。

从上文中我们还可以看到时下的流行语——“房奴”是mortgage slaves。“房奴”是指城镇居民抵押贷款购房，在生命黄金时期中的20到30年，每年用占可支配收入的40%至50%甚至更高的比例偿还贷款本息，从而造成居民家庭生活的长期压力，影响正常消费。购房影响到自己教育支出、医药费支出和抚养老人等，使得家庭生活质量下降，甚至让人感到奴役般的压抑。然而，在大城市中还存在着连“房奴”都当不上的人群，其中就包括ant tribe（蚁族），指的是收入微薄，白天从事不稳定工作，晚上聚居于outskirt（市郊）的城乡结合部的北漂大学毕业生。许多到了婚龄的80后因为没有能力买房，不得不进行naked wedding（裸婚）。
